Moving an Elderly Parent to Memory Care with Care

Start with the care team

Ask the memory care community what furniture is permitted, how rooms are arranged, when move-ins are least disruptive, and which personal items are most helpful. Share information about routines, preferences, triggers, and comforting activities.

Plan around your parent’s best time of day

Many people with memory loss function better at a certain time. A morning move may be easier for one person, while another may do better after breakfast and medication. Avoid rushing and keep the number of people involved as small as practical.

Create a familiar room

Bring recognizable bedding, a favorite chair, framed family photographs, a clock, familiar artwork, and a few treasured objects. Try to arrange the room in a way that feels simple, safe, and recognizable rather than crowded.

Pack quietly and gradually

When possible, sort and pack outside your parent’s direct view. Large stacks of boxes and disappearing belongings may increase anxiety. Label everything clearly and keep essential items in one separate bag.

Use simple, reassuring communication

Long explanations may create distress. Use short sentences, a calm tone, and reassurance such as, ‘We are going somewhere safe where people can help.’ Avoid arguing about details your parent cannot process.

Coordinate the arrival

Have the room mostly ready before your parent arrives. Ask staff to greet them and begin a familiar activity or meal. A long, emotional goodbye can sometimes make the transition harder; follow the facility’s guidance.

Expect an adjustment period

Changes in sleep, appetite, mood, or confusion may occur. Stay in close contact with the care team, but allow staff time to establish routines. The adjustment can take days or weeks.

Protect important documents and valuables

Personally transport identification, insurance cards, legal documents, medication lists, jewelry, cash, and irreplaceable keepsakes. Do not pack these items in the moving truck.
