Think about the life you are moving toward
Downsizing is easier when the new home—not the old house—guides decisions. Consider how you want to spend your time, what the new space can hold, and which belongings support the next chapter.
Start early and work in short sessions
Begin months before the move when possible. Work for 30 to 60 minutes at a time, starting with low-emotion areas such as a linen closet or pantry. Small, steady decisions are less exhausting than a rushed cleanout.
Use four clear categories
Sort items into keep, give to family, donate or sell, and discard. Avoid a large ‘maybe’ pile. When uncertain, photograph the item, note its story, and decide whether the memory can be preserved without keeping the object.
Measure the new home
Create a floor plan and choose furniture before moving day. Keep only pieces that fit, serve a purpose, and allow safe movement. Oversized furniture can make a smaller home feel crowded immediately.
Handle sentimental items with care
Invite family members to select meaningful pieces, digitize photographs and letters, and keep a limited memory box. Tell the stories connected to objects so the history is not lost when an item is donated.
Work room by room
In the kitchen, keep daily-use tools. In closets, keep clothing that fits and is worn. In garages and basements, remove duplicates and unfinished projects. In living areas, choose favorite furniture rather than trying to recreate the entire old home.
Plan donations and disposal
Contact charities early, confirm what they accept, and schedule pickups. Arrange safe disposal for chemicals, medications, electronics, and confidential paperwork.
Protect legal and financial records
Shred outdated sensitive papers, but keep tax records, property documents, insurance information, estate documents, military records, and medical information according to professional guidance.
Make the new space feel complete
Unpack the bedroom and bathroom first, hang familiar artwork, make the bed, and set up lighting and essential electronics. A finished, comfortable room helps the new home feel welcoming.
Ask for help before the process becomes overwhelming
